About Sakrebailu Elephant Camp

The Sakrebailu Wildlife Range, located within the Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary of Shivamogga district - popularly known as the Gateway to Malenadu - is a scenic and naturally gifted region. It is adorned with dense green vegetation, diverse plant species, and a rich variety of wildlife, making it a truly enchanting destination.

The Sakrebailu elephant camp is situated on the left side of the Shivamogga - Tirthahalli main road, about 14 km from Shivamogga city. It is said that the camp was originally established for capturing wild elephants, taming them, and training them for important departmental duties such as forest protection, elephant training, and using elephants for timber dragging operations.According to records, during 1968-69, the Sakrebailu elephant camp housed 84 trained elephants.

The camp is also renowned for its reputation as the "elephant camp that always has a mother elephant with a suckling calf" highlighting its long-standing tradition of elephant care. At present, the elephant camp is located in Sakrebailu State Forest, Survey No. 02.
